Argireline is a trade name (not an INCI name) for a synthetic neuropeptide whose official INCI designation is Acetyl Hexapeptide-8. Argireline was created as a cosmetic ingredient inspired by the mechanism of action of botulinum toxin (used in aesthetic medicine), but working through a completely different, much gentler and topical route.
Argireline is one of the most recognisable cosmetic neuropeptides, often marketed as a "topical alternative" to smoothing expression lines — though, as we explain below, this comparison requires significant caveats.
Argireline's mechanism of action is based on interfering with the process of neurotransmitter release at nerve endings responsible for facial muscle contraction. In simplified terms, the peptide limits the "strength" of the signal reaching the muscle, which can lead to reduced tension and, over time, less pronounced expression lines caused by repeated muscle movement (e.g. around the eyes and forehead).
It's worth clearly noting: Argireline's effect is much more limited and gradual than that of botulinum toxin injections. It does not "freeze" the muscle — it works on cellular signalling, and the effect is spread out over regular use rather than immediate.
Botox (botulinum toxin) is an injectable substance administered by a medical specialist, which blocks neuromuscular transmission much more strongly and directly. Argireline is a cosmetic ingredient applied topically to the skin's surface, with a considerably gentler and more limited scope of action. These are two different categories of products with different mechanisms, strength of effect, and regulatory status — they should not be treated as interchangeable, and marketing comparisons ("Botox in a jar") should always be read with a critical eye.

As with any active ingredient, the mere presence of Argireline on the INCI says nothing about its concentration — the position on the list and, ideally, a manufacturer's statement about concentration are what matter.
Argireline works according to a completely different principle than Biopeptide Complex — it limits excessive facial muscle tension, making its action comparable (though far gentler than invasive treatments) to a smoothing alternative for expression lines. Biopeptide Complex does not act on facial muscles at all — its mechanism focuses on supporting collagen synthesis through fibroblast signalling.
