Ectoine — an ingredient borrowed from extremophile organisms

These organisms (extremophiles) produce ectoine to protect their cells from dehydration, high temperatures and UV radiation. In cosmetics it works in an analogous way — surrounding skin cells with a protective "water shell", stabilising cell membranes and shielding them from environmental stress.
